A special performance of sacred Tibetan dances, dating to the eighth century, is scheduled at the Palyul Ling International Retreat Center, located near Smithville Flats, for Saturday, August 10th at 4:30 p.m.
The program will include sacred and rarely seen Lama Dances performed by specially trained Buddhist monks. They perform in brightly-colored costumes and elaborate masks and are accompanied by other monks playing an array of traditional Tibetan instruments.
The monks dance in a state of meditation meant to elicit a deeply moving experience for the observer. Tibetan Buddhists believe these dances balance spiritual energies, prevent negativity and increase the peace and harmony of the planet. Also included for the first time this year will be two traditional Tibetan folk dances, the Lion Dance and the Yak Dance.
His Holiness Penor Rinpoche (1932-2009), a renowned Buddhist master, founded the Palyul Retreat Center in 1998 as a place for people from the United States and around the world to deepen their spiritual practice. The retreat takes place every summer for one month. In his lifetime, His Holiness founded many such centers around the world. He was internationally recognized for his compassion and faithful adherence to Buddhist principles. His spiritual successor, His Holiness Karma Kuchen Rinpoche, who is leading this year’s Summer Retreat, will attend the performance.
The Tibetan dance program is free to the public. Refreshments will be served afterwards. The Palyul Retreat Center is about 30 miles from Binghamton. Hollow Road forks north off Route 220 just outside of Smithville Flats. The turn is marked by a large blue “PALYUL” sign. More detailed directions can be found on our website. Resident monks are always available. Anyone interested in Tibetan culture or religion is warmly invited to visit at any time.
