Dates: July 10 – July 18
Description:
The Four Thoughts retreat marks the commencement of our preliminary practices, spanning eight days dedicated to orienting practitioners towards the path of Dharma. Participants will explore foundational practices critical for spiritual awakening. This retreat offers a blend of intensive teachings, practical meditation, and chanting, designed to immerse participants in the core Buddhist contemplations of the precious human life, impermanence, the workings of karma, and the cycle of existence. With a focus on experiential learning and understanding, this retreat lays the groundwork for advancing on the spiritual path, accessible to all interested in deepening their practice. One of the most senior Khenchens from Namdroling Monastery, Khenchen Pema Sherab Rinpoche, has been heard to say, “We are lucky if we can gain realization of the Four Thoughts.”
Teachings are in Tibetan, given by one of our visiting lamas, with simultaneous translation in English, Nepalese, and Chinese.
Under the guidance of Lama Pasang Tenzin, our class instructor known for his deep knowledge and continuous practice of Ngöndro and compassionate teaching style, attendees will not only learn through lectures but also engage in practical contemplative practices and chanting sessions. The retreat is structured to include significant periods for questions and answers, providing a thorough clarity and deepening participants’ understanding and connection to the teachings.
The journey of the Four Foundations begins with this deep dive into the Four Thoughts—the essential contemplations that steer the mind towards a genuine appreciation of the Dharma. These initial teachings encourage participants to recognize the preciousness of human life, the reality of life’s impermanence, the nature of our existence in cyclic existence (samsara), and the universal law of Karma. Through these contemplations, attendees develop awareness of the spiritual opportunity at hand and the urgency of pursuing liberation.
As the retreat progresses, detailed teachings on the principles of Karma, the true value of Liberation, and the cultivation of a spiritual connection lay the foundation for the Refuge teachings. This segment is designed not only to provide theoretical knowledge but also to foster a lived experience of these profound truths, preparing participants for the subsequent steps on their spiritual journey.
Completing this retreat is a pivotal step, equipping participants with the necessary understanding and spiritual groundwork before advancing to the Refuge teachings. It ensures a solid foundation upon which deeper insights and practices can be built, marking the beginning of a profound journey into the heart of Buddhist spirituality.
